The arts have been used throughout history as a means of expression for the individual, social groups and communities of all cultures. Whether it be a “voice” for struggle or joy, it resonates in the soul bringing into consciousness an awareness for change. Expressive Arts is an effective and specialised counselling intervention, which facilitates the overall health and well-being of clients.
Clients explore their creativity and use their imagination, drawing on their inner resources to develop valuable coping skills and find solutions to deal with daily life. Through the medium of the arts (be it music, drama, visual art, movement/dance, creative writing, poetry and play), clients gain insight and self-awareness. Engaging in the arts is a healing process, which can bring about personal growth and positive change in physical, mental and emotional health.
